Science Happy Hour + The Many Autisms

  • Museum at Prairiefire 5801 W. 135th Street Overland Park United States (map)

Doors 5:30 pm
Talk 6:00 pm

Dr. Matt Masconi, KU Life Span Institute, University of Kansas

The definition of autism has changed almost continuously since its original presentation in 1943. One constant is that the diagnosis is based on behavioral observation, though new insights into the biological bases of autism are now shaping how we think about it, and whether we should really be thinking about autism as a single entity. This talk by Matt Mosconi, director of the Kansas Center for Autism Research and Training, will examine the history of the definition of autism and how new scientific discoveries on the genetic and brain bases of autism have led many of us to think about the “autisms” rather than autism.

Matt Mosconi, KU Associate Professor of Clinical Child Psychology, is the Director of the Kansas Center for Autism Research and Training (K-Cart) and Associate Scientist within the Life Span Institute. His research focuses on understanding the brain development across the lifespan in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related neurodevelopmental disorders.
