Where does wind come from?  You can't see it, but you can feel it.  You might even notice that days with sudden temperature differences, like a cold morning turning into a warm afternoon on a fall day, seem to be windier than days with little temperature difference.  Why is this so?  It has to do with how temperature affects air pressure.  Especially in spring, interactions between air temperatures and pressure changes can produce severe and dangerous weather conditions.

In this weather science JAM, we will demonstrate how wind is generated, why some times of the year are windier than others, and what causes wind to circulate and form the tornadoes Kansas is so well known for.  After learning the science of wind, you will construct your own wind vane (a device that tells you the direction from which the wind is blowing) using materials you can find at home.

Class is at 10:15 am

PLEASE NOTE:

  • We require a 24 hour cancellation notice for Little Explorers Club and JAM Sessions reservations via emailing info@visitthemap.org. Please include the name on the reservation, number of students, date and time of the class.

  • Please help create an outstanding learning environment by limiting disruptions in the classroom!

  • Parents are, of course, always welcome to remain in class but should a parent choose to step out, we have provided a seating area just outside the classrooms. Parents and siblings are also welcome to explore our Discovery Room or the rest of the Museum until the class concludes.
